Question about the Thirds

by Frankli » 07 Nov 2005, 00:53

Yet another mathematical thing that has been running around in my brain for a while and increasing my fascination of math.

1/3 = .333333333....

2/3 = .666666666....

yet
3/3 = 1

So that means that somehow .3333333.... + .666666.... = 1, but, in actuality, it equals .999999.....

Where does the extra .00000.....1 come from?

that's a good questions...and the answer is 42.

if you take 42*3 you get 126
if you take 42/3 you get 14
if you take 42^.5 [square root] you get 6.5
if you take 42^(1/3) [cube root] you get 3.5

Now... take 126-14-6.48-3.48 that gives you
102.0 to 3 significant digits.

Take 102/3 and you get your 34 .... 34+66 = 100.

Go forth and spread the word.
"Because I choose to."

It's cos it's not exact...2/3 is actually .6666666666666....and however long you want to go on, and so eventually when it gets rounded off it's .66666....7. It's stupid, cos how can .333333..... be 1/3 and .66666.....7 be 2/3? but that's the way it is. Ask a math teacher. lol ;)

I already answered that question. It's because of 42.

I came across this article on wikipedia not even like 1 or 2 hours after I made this thread:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that ... ._equals_1

I would've posted it earlier, but I kept getting an error message from The Spot saying that I couldn't post so soon to my other post.
