What is taboo?

by Drunkensailor » 29 Apr 2004, 02:21

Ok I understand that there are certain things that don't have any place on these forums, namely porn and warez and the such, but what else is a bad thing to post. Can I post a link to a P2P network I found? Can I put up links to haking community sites? What is tabo?

I read the FAQ looking for some insight, but I didn't find any helpful information, and I'm not just going to go around posting questionable material haphazardly to see what the moderators delete and what they don't. I think that would get on some nerves...

also, on what kinds of things should we put a disclaimer on, like "If you don't like boobies don't click this link" or something?

Well, so far we've only had to disallow a couple things. One of which is talk about sexual practices and the like. Some may not be bothered by it, but it is not very wholesome conversation for a site like this. Other disallowances would be links and information concerning pirated material. We don't want the RIAA or other authorities to start watching this site for material that is questionable and illegal. While most people are engaged in such activities, it's not necessary to announce who they are, and what they're using. (Keep in mind that things that are posted on this site can be searched for in google.com and possibly show up there.)

As far as other things, you'd just have to give some examples...I am a bit too tired to be able to think of any more right now.

Also, if you, or anyone, has questions about the site, you can email them to inquiry@the-spot.net I believe. I think that's still an email address. But if not, I will end up getting them anyway.

Pretty much anything that is pirated, while I'd say about a good portion of us are downloading pirated stuff, we disallow posting links.

For example:

I do not allow posting where you can download ROMS and Emulators. While I know of a few places where you can get them, I do not want to post direct locations of where they are, because as Neo stated, you can just do a google search and our site will most likely be posted, and not only will it give direct links, it will also have our names all over it. So for your safty, its not very ideal to post links to ROMS and emulators.

Same with music, gaming, and various other mediums.

Now if the medium was purposely placed over the internet with foreknowledge (i.e. Mastercard Spoofs, Star Wars Kid, Webcomics, movie .gifs, etc...) with the noted copyright (like webcomics, and if there is one), then I say that's ok (as well as being ok with the other mods and Neo).

If you are not sure, go ahead and send either myself or Neo a pm or an email. If size is an issue, send it my way due to having broadband, but if its dialup worthy, it can be sent either to Neo or myself.

yes I think if you want to give someone else a link to a pirated site or downloads... just PM them and it should be all good... I don't think the RIAA has access to our PMs...

:P the RIAA can search my fart jar!

i haven't been messing around with all that piracy crap for a long time... not exactly for the moral side of the issue, but it's becoming much more difficult to find it without having some spyware, or crap like that attatched. even Yahoo! installs adware on your computer silently... just install spybot, and set up the I.E. protection, and you'll see... also, people slip viruses/worms/trojans or whatever on your computer, and use it as a sorce of distribution (makes you wonder when your computer is uploading something you never downloaded, or installed). the internet is turning into a heap of crap! computers are being bogged down, because of all these extra programs that run silently in the background. ah well... i've gone off, it seems... i do that a lot, don't i?
