QuickQuip #20

by spiffy1001 » 30 Jun 2004, 01:57

Neo, I recently saw QuickQuip #20, "Almost as useful as a compass at the North Pole." Although I find your QuickQuips funny, entertaining and refreshing usually I must dispute the scientific backup for this Quip. You see that quip is funny because it infers that a compass is useless at the North Pole, not so! As any good Eagle Scout knows Compasses don't just magically know where the North Pole is, there is a thing called "Magnetic North, close to the pole, but definatly not on the pole. To find true North you must take your geographic location and adjust your compass appropriatly. The magnetic North is located in the Canadian arctic and is slowly moving on a daily basis. This year it is located roughly at 82.3 degrees Latitude and 113.4 degrees longitude. So you see that if you were on the North Pole and had a compass you would probably be able to find Northern Canada. Just thought you should know.
I read your e-mail.

That proves my theory, I was right :!: :P
Canada is the center of the universe
And to think the scientific community laughed at me!

Well, you're right Spiffy...however, as any loyal ETBU student knows - the Compass is the name of the college's student publication - and being that that quickquip has been around since etbustudents.cc (and was infact the slogan for OUR online newspaper, etbui...the Compass it is referring to (because I believe it is capitalized) is the newspaper.

While there is a pun on the word Compass, it is directed to make fun of the biasedness of the student publication.

Nice attempt at spin Neo, but the quick quip says 'a compass' not 'the Compass' as a former ETBU student YOU should know that unless you call it 'the Compass' you will assume they are talking about a magnetic instrument used for direction finding.

;) I never reead the paper...my mistake - but I did change it from being capital and italicized to just standard text. But you're thinking too hard about this...

Make two posts, lie down, and call us in the morning. ;)

Well, I just want TSN to be all it can be, and I try to make corrctions as I go through. Why do I do this? It may sound corny - but I respect you Neo, I truly respect your music. Sorry if I have disturbed you.

Thank you for your concern. I have corrected the QuickQuip to reflect its true meaning.
